Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting substances of uncertain source.
Some experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited associated hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Online Trading Operations
Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
After moments of entering one group, a seller posted contact information, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Within these groups, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Security Actions
A representative for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not include what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has previously encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
