The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. As bewildering as it is to watch the president try to upend the established notion about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more gradually, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in biblical accounts.

The obvious and clear fact that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the needy has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a controversial faith: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump develop during the previous year.
