The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
