Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers say they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then located many other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

A senior representative commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
